What happens at a Pelvic Floor PT visit?

Physical Therapy Evaluation

The evaluation for any condition usually consists of watching you move, muscle testing, joint mobility assessment, and palpation. Basically you will walk, bend over, get up and down from the exam mat, and roll over. The PT will assess how the muscles and joints interact both under your control and with the PT moving the area. Lumbar, hips, and pelvic floor are usually all part of an the assessment for a pelvic floor condition.

The vaginal or rectal exam, if needed for your specific condition, will take place once you are fully comfortable with the information that will be gained from this exam and how it will help your specific condition.

Billing your Insurance

Services provided at Future Physical Therapy are medical services. We are currently “in-network” with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, and Aetna. We are “out-of-network” with other plans due to inconsistent and poor reimbursement practices. We offer a discounted Self Pay rate for individuals without coverage or those covered by plans outside of our payer relationships.

We use the billing codes associated with the different treatments listed here to send information about the services provided to your insurance company for payment.

You will be responsible for any deductibles, copayments, or coinsurances as declared by your individual insurance plan and your outpatient physical therapy benefits through that plan.

Manual Therapy

Highly skilled hands on treatments to reduce spasms, correct alignment, or provide input in the nervous system to reduce pain and tightness.

Therapeutic Exercise

An exercise that is chosen specifically for you and your condition, that is usually either to strengthen or stretch a muscle or area of the body.

Neuromuscular Re-education

An activity or exercise, usually with feedback from your therapist to correct movement or muscle recruitment patterns. It helps build the brain body connection. This is an important one in Pelvic Health, because often the body has the strength but lacks to coordination for the muscles to work properly. This can lead to pain or dysfunction.

Therapeutic Activities

These tasks vary widely from relearning how to perform house hold chores to your PT making recommendations for changes in your diet, habits, or postures during specific activities.

Trigger Point Dry Needling

Our physical therapist is specifically trained in the techniques of trigger point dry needling to help reduce muscle spasms and pain. These techniques can also “wake up” certain muscle groups that are not working properly that may be part of your condition. This is a premium service and is not always covered by insurance, but is only $40 per session if you wish to receive this premium service even if your insurance plan does not cover it.

Modalities

The “feel good” stuff. This is usually the electrical stimulation unit, similar to TENS, with moist heat or ice to help further promote healing and relaxation.

Education

One of the most important aspects of the pelvic health specialty is helping you understand the normal function of the bowel, bladder, and sexual organs as well as their connection to the ever important nervous system and muscles of the pelvic floor, hips and spine. We love our pelvis model because it is a visual tool we have to teach you about our awesome bodies...our favorite topic!
